Every week on Let’s all Talk Mental Health, we discuss some of the hardest issues that your teenager might be facing so that you, as parents, can understand, help and support them.

To do this we are lucky to work with some of the UK’s leading therapists and experts in child and teen psychology.

  • Dr Sarah-Jane Knight

    Dr Sarah-Jane Knight is our resident Clinical Psychologist and has worked in outpatient and inpatient services in CAMHS (Children and Adolescent Mental Health Services) and now within a private practise, Commune Psychology. With a wealth of clinical experience she is able to understand and articulate complex difficulties and work flexibly to find a way forward.

  • Dr Bettina Hohnen

    Dr Bettina Hohnen is a Consultant Clinical Psychologist who has worked with families in the NHS and private practice for 20+ years.

    Bettina holds an academic position at UCL where she teaches in the field of child and adolescent mental health, neurodiversity and education to Masters and Doctoral students. She is an author (The Incredible Teenage Brain and How to Have Incredible Conversations With Your Child), broadcaster (BBC TV and radio) and podcaster (Incredible Conversations). She consults to organisations and school and is an engaging public speaker.

  • Dr Jane Gilmour

    Dr Jane Gilmour is a Consultant Clinical Psychologist and is a Clinical Lecturer of UCL Great Ormond Street Institute of Child Health, specialising in Neuropsychology, and Developmental Psychology. Jane is also the co-author of 'The Incredible Teenage Brain: Everything You Need to Know to Unlock Your Teen's Potential' and 'The Incredible Teenage Brain: Everything You Need to Know to Unlock Your Teen's PotentialHow to Unlock Your Teen's Potential' and 'How to Have Incredible Conversations with your Child: A book for parents, carers and children to use together. A place to make conversation. A way to build your relationship'.

  • Dr Shirley Reynolds

    Dr Shirley Reynolds is an experienced clinical psychologist, research lead and author. She has been the Director of the Charlie Waller Institute at the University of Reading, Head of the Department of Clinical Psychology at Norwich Medical School and President of the British Association of Behavioral and Cognitive Therapy (BABCP). Shirley is also Founder and Director of CBTReach, delivering online training workshops in CBT.

  • Harry Biggs-Davison

    Harry Biggs-Davidson is Chair of the charity Papyrus and a bereaved father, whose son Patrick died by suicide in 2015. Papyrus support, equip and influence individuals, groups and communities to prevent suicide in young people

  • Jacqueline Galanty

    Jacqueline Galanty is an HCPC Registered Senior Dietitian, child nutritionist and founder of Nutritional, a private family nutrition clinic. As well as in her own clinic, Jacqueline also works within the NHS, within Child and Adolescent Mental Health Service (CAMHS) and acute London hospitals as a Dietitian alongside families with teenagers with learning disability, autism, ADHD, eating disorders and disordered eating associated with mental health challenges.

  • Dr Nicole Schnackenberg

    Doctor Nicole Schnackenberg is a Child, Community and Educational Psychologist, a psychothe­­rapist, and yoga teacher. She works as a psychologist at Southend Educational Psychology Service, is a trustee of the Body Dysmorphic Disorder Foundation and of the Give Back Yoga Foundation UK and a director of the Yoga in Healthcare Alliance. She has also authored and edited numerous books including, most recently, 'The Parent's Guide to BDD' (Jessica Kingsley) and 'The Practical Handbook of Eating Difficulties' (Pavillion).

  • Dr Bryony Bamford

    Dr Bryony Bamford has worked with individuals with eating disorders for the past 20 years. Bryony is the Founder and Director of The London Centre for Eating Disorders and Body Image, a private psychology led outpatient clinic that offers highly specialist treatment to eating disorder sufferers of all ages, as well as to their families and carers. Bryony is co-author of the book Bulimia binge-eating and their treatment, and has published a large number of research papers.

  • Dr Faith Orchard

    Dr Faith Orchard, is a Research Psychologist in the School of Psychology and Clinical Language Sciences at the University of Reading with a special interest in develop our understanding of factors involved in adolescent depression, including negative thinking patterns and sleep disturbances. Faith is also the co-author co-author of the paper Self-Reported Sleep Patterns and Quality amongst Adolescents, Cross-Sectional and Prospective Associations with Anxiety and Depression.

  • Dr Victoria Hallett

    Dr Victoria Hallett is a Senior Clinical Psychologist at the National and Specialist CAMHS OCD, BDD and Related Disorders Service (South London and Maudsley Hospital). She provides specialist assessment and Cognitive Behaviour Therapy (CBT) to young people with OCD and their families. Tori has a strong interest in clinical academic research, with peer reviewed publications focussing on OCD, childhood anxiety and autism spectrum disorders (ASD) and is the Teaching and Training Coordinator for the OCD Clinic, with a passion for delivering OCD-related training across both clinical and academic settings.

  • Dr Judy Eaton

    Dr Judy Eaton is the Lead Clinical Psychologist at Help4Psychology, who are a team of highly experienced clinicians working Adults and Adolescents with Autism Spectrum Disorders (ASD), Pathological Demand Avoidance, (PDA), Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) and Developmental Trauma. Judy has worked worked in the field of psychological assessment and intervention since 1993, and is the author of "A Guide to Mental Health Issues in Girls and Young Women on the Autism Spectrum: Diagnosis, Intervention and Family Support.

  • Dr Fran Boudour

    Dr Fran Boudour is a Clinical Psychologist specialising in children and young people. She holds a senior leadership role across several teams within Merton CAMHS and is also founder and CEO of Little Bird Psychology, a private psychology service based in South West London. The service provides bespoke psychological assessment and treatment for young people and their families and also offers training to schools and other professionals as well as free mental health advice via their instagram page (@littlebirdpsychology). Dr Boudour has a wealth of experience working with children and families experiencing a wide range of mental health difficulties.

  • Dr Alex Doig

    Dr Alex Doig is a Consultant Child & Adolescent Psychiatrist working within CAMHS Tier 3 within the NHS in South West London and has a particular interest in CYP and ADHD.

  • Dr Maryhan

    Dr Maryhan is a world-renowned parenting expert and psychologist. For over 20 years she has been supporting children with anxiety and helping parents raise confident, resilient children. Her globally charting How Not to Screw Up Your Kids podcast has been named one of the top 5 parenting podcasts by The Guardian. Dr Maryhan is also the founder of the not-for-profit One Million Moments campaign, which takes a preventative approach to reducing children’s mental health.

  • Anastassis Spiliadis

    Anastassis Spiliadis, is a Systemic and Family Psychotherapist and Psychologist. Anastassis has worked for different specialist and generic NHS mental health services, including the Gender Identity Development Service (GIDS), the Maudsley Centre for Eating Disorders and Royal Free Hospital. He is currently in private practice and offering training, consultation and supervision to different NHS teams.

  • Dr Maja Schaedel

    Dr Maja Schaedel is a qualified Clinical Psychologist who co-founded The Good Sleep Clinic in 2019 Maja has worked with sleep difficulties and other mental health problems in the NHS for nearly 20 years. Her experience spans across a wide range of child and adult mental health services, including previous roles as Principle Clinical Psychologist at Great Ormond Street Children’s Hospital and Head of Psychological Therapies at the Queen Victoria NHS Foundation Hospital. She has worked in two regional NHS Sleep centres and has led teams of psychologists working with trauma, anxiety, depression, obsessive-compulsive disorder, eating disorders and self-harm.

  • Dr Roz Shafran

    Dr Roz Shafran is a Professor of Translational Psychology at the UCL Great Ormond Street Institute of Child Health and an honorary Consultant Clinical Psychologist. She founded the Charlie Waller Institute of Evidenced Based Psychological Treatment at the University of Reading in 2007 and continues to advise for the Charlie Waller Memorial Trust. As well as research and written contributions, Roz has also co-authored and co-edited four self-help books the most recent of which is 'How to Cope When Your Child Can’t” along with Dr Ursula Saunders and Alice Welham.

  • Fiona Spargo-Mabbs

    Fiona Spargo-Mabbs is Director and Founder of drug education charity the Daniel Spargo-Mabbs Foundation, and an award-winning author. Fiona co-founded the charity in 2014 in response to the death of her 16-year-old son Daniel having taken ecstasy. Her book, I Wish I’d Known: Young People, Drugs and Decisions – A Guide for Parents and Carers (Sheldon Press, 2021) won the Gold Medal for Parents and Families in the Nautilus Book Awards 2022, and her most recent book for parents, Talking the Tough Stuff with Teens (Sheldon Press) will be published in December 2022. . Fiona’s passionate commitment to do all she can to prevent what happened to her son happening to anyone else drives everything she does.   • Dr Gemma Allison

    Dr Gemma Allison is a Clinical Psychologist with specialist training since qualifying in Cognitive Analytic Therapy (CAT). Her approach to therapy is to work collaboratively with clients from teenagers and their families to adults in a collaborative way, to identify a focus for therapy and to work together for an agreed number of sessions. Gemma employs CBT, CAT and DBT approaches in her therapeutic work, often an approach integrating different approaches is needed to treat a client’s psychological difficulties. She has a wealth of experience treating teenagers with a range of psychological difficulties in private practice.Gemma has experience of working in the NHS, including working in a specialist adolescent team within CAMHS and working with young people experiencing psychosis. She continues to work in the NHS as a lead psychologist for an adult inpatient mental health service.

  • Dr Emily Nobes

    Dr Emily Nobes is a Clinical Psychologist who works with children and adolescents. Most of Emily's career has been within the NHS, where she worked within CAMHS for many years, and was the clinical lead for a large CBT treatment service for children and adolescents with anxiety disorders, depression, OCD and PTSD. Her specialist interest is in OCD, and anxiety disorders and the application of evidence-based therapies such as CBT. Emily currently splits her time between clinical work, an autism assessment service and teaching at the Charlie Waller Institute, University of Reading, training clinicians in evidence based psychological treatments.   • Anya Sizer

    Councillor Anya Sizer is Speaker for the London Borough of Hackney and Councillor for Hoxton East and Shoreditch. She is also a mother of three, including her adopted child. She has worked for over 17 years within the fertility sector most recently as lead for Fertility in the Workplace for Fertility Network UK. As The Speaker for Hackney 2023/4, Anya is working with 3 charities who focus on mental health support.

  • Dr Zoe Kindynis

    Dr Kindynis is a Senior Clinical Psychologist who specialises in assessment and treatment of Obsessive Compulsive Disorder. In the NHS she worked at the National and Specialist OCD, BDD and Related Disorders Service for Children and Young People. Alongside this, she is a Co-Founder of The Specialist OCD Clinic, where they aim to provide the highest quality evidence-based care to adults and young people with Obsessive Compulsive Disorder.

  • Dr Tamasine Black

    Dr Tamasine Black is an Educational and Child Psychologist and founder of Tabla Psychology. She has more than 20 years of experience working with children and families and 12 years’ experience as an educational psychologist. She has a wealth of experience in autism and ADHD assessment and mindfulness cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT).

  • Dr Lucy Betts

    Dr Lucy Betts is a Professor in Social Developmental Psychology at Nottingham Trent University and lead NTU Psychology's bullying and aggressive behaviour research group.

  • Dr Russel Woodhead

    Dr Russell Woodhead is a Clinical Psychologist working within CAMHS and in private practice, Thriving Teen. Russell has worked with children and their families for over a decade, first in education and now as a clinical psychologist specialising in supporting young people with emotional regulation difficulties. His previous roles include working in a community team serving young people at risk of harming themselves or others, and now in hospital for adolescents requiring inpatient treatment. Russell has a particular interest in attachment and interpersonal neurobiology: the science of how the brain and mind develop in response to our relationships with others.

  • Esther Usiskin Cohen

    Esther Usiskin Cohen (BA Hons, Manchester, MA, CQSW, Sussex, and MSc, London, FEA Tavistock Clinic) is a Consultant Systemic/Family Psychotherapist and the Head of the Systemic and Multi-Modal Training Portfolio at the Tavistock Clinic, the world-renowned centre for the treatment of children with emotional difficulties, and a prestigious training institution. She is registered with the UKCP and AFT. as a supervisor. Esther has more than 30 years of wide-ranging experience working with adults, families, couples, young people and children in difficult relationships and in a variety of settings. She works with a comprehensive range of adult, child, adolescent, family and couple issues; for example: addictions, anxiety, and complex family separations .

  • Nihara Krause

    Dr Nihara Krause MBE is an award-winning Consultant Clinical Psychologist, lecturer, international speaker and founder and CEO of stem4, teenage mental health charity. She works as a clinician with older adolescents and adults and has specific expertise in eating disorders, self-harm, trauma and clinical perfectionism. She has a keen interest in providing tools to build resilience from birth through to adulthood. Her wellbeing programme, MINDYOUR5 and digital mental health literacy programme, HEAD-ED has been accessed by over 700 schools. She has written numerous resources on mental health including looking after your mental health in the pandemic, translated into 6 languages. She is the clinical creator of 5, evidence based mental health apps: Calm Harm, Clear Fear, Combined Minds, Worth Warrior and Move Mood downloaded across the world over 3.5 million times. Three of the apps also have accompanying resources to help over the pandemic. She has created an anxiety management video for people apprehensive of having their vaccination, rolled out in several centres in the UK. Nihara is a ‘Bloss’ expert on perinatal and postnatal mental health issues. She has spoken to a great number of corporates on mental health matters.
